Euans (and our) epilepsy journey

This March I am joining the fundraising efforts for Epilepsy Australia.
Our son, Euan, was diagnosed with Epilepsy the day after his 7th birthday. I was woken in the middle of the night to find him seizing. It was a terrifying time, and the journey so far has been anything from straightforward.
We were initially told that Euans Epilepsy was ‘SELECTs’ which was described as ‘the best epilepsy if diagnosed as you outgrow it in the teen years with out too many complications’.

Euan had also previously been diagnosed with ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Developemental Language Disorder and was awaiting assessment for learning challenges.
When we got home from our Perth trip, Euan had a cluster of 5 seizures in a short time and what followed was a massive deterioration in his speech. 
He couldn’t remember how to say his brothers name, identify simple common words lite ‘shorts’ and ‘fork’.  At its worst he was mute and shut down, and communicated with picture boards. 

More testing identified that Euans initial diagnosis was incorrect, and he actually has Landau Kleffner Syndrome (LKS). This is a rare form of epilepsy affecting one in a million.
It’s characterised by Aphasia of speech, agnosia of sound, behavioural and learning problems- everything that we already knew were areas 
Of challenge for him.

Thanks to his paediatrician and Neurology team, he has had three months of increased treatment and we have seen so much improvement. 
We are still hopeful that Euan will outgrow his seizures in adolescents, however every time he has a seizure he is at risk of causing permanent damage to his speech and communication centres. 
He is a beautiful boy, with a caring nature and a cheeky playfulness, and life for him can be very hard. LKS Epilepsy has affected him socially and emotionally and impacted on his learning, his self esteem and his relationships with others. 

We are very lucky to be able to support him with therapies like speech and tutoring, and are aware that many people with LKS go undiagnosed because it is rare, and they may not have the knowledge or the finances to be able to chase down answers and therapies.

I’m sharing this today to help raise awareness, and to help raise funds for Epilepsy Tasmania.
